Ever see the bins of mis-mixed paint at the store but you think - I need more than one gallon and there aren't 2 alike. Find two or three gallons that are close to the same, have the store shake/mix them again before you leave, buy a 5 gallon bucket with a lid and go home and mix'em up. You want to make sure the paints are similar sheen - may not go well if you mix high gloss with flat - but I have successfully mixed sheens are similar - ie. gloss and semi-gloss or satin and eggshell... You will get great paint at a bargain. A quality gallon of paint is generally $20-$30 a gallon and clearance/mis-mixed is usually about $5 to $8 a gallon.
I don't recommend mixing colors - example: red and yellow to get orange - because wallpaint colors, especially deeper colors, don't always mix true.
I started doing this when I went to the store one day to buy 3 gallons of a mocha color for my livingroom (planning to spend about $80) and found exactly 3 gallons of 3 slightly different shades of the color I was looking for. I ended up spending $24 for paint and $4 for a 5 gallon bucket with lid = saving atleast $52. Plus I reuse the large bucket when I'm done and put any leftover paint in one of the gallon containers for touch-ups.
